MAHATMA GANDHI ABOUT HIM Mahatma Gandhi, also known as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, was a political leader in India during the early 20th century. He was born on October 2, 1869 in Porbandar, India and died on January 30, 1948 in New Delhi, India. Gandhi is best known for leading the Indian independence movement against British colonial rule, using non-violent civil disobedience and other forms of peaceful protest. Gandhi studied law in London and later worked as a lawyer in South Africa, where he first began to develop his ideas about non-violent resistance. He returned to India in 1915 and quickly became a leader in the Indian independence movement. He led boycotts and protests against British-made goods and the British government's heavy taxes on the Indian people.
